13 Days to Leave: Kibera Tenants Face Urgent Eviction as Renewal Plan Sparks Tension

A wave of uncertainty is sweeping through Kibera after the government issued a sudden eviction notice to tenants in Soweto Zones C and D. More than 10,000 residents have been told to vacate within 13 days. The directive has sparked concern among families who now face displacement with little time to prepare.

The notice, issued by the State Department of Housing, sets April 23 as the final day for residents to leave. Clearance of the area is expected to begin immediately after. “Kindly evacuate the site before April 23, 2026,” reads part of the directive. Authorities say the move is necessary to allow the next phase of redevelopment to proceed without delays.

At the heart of the plan is the government’s push to transform informal settlements into modern residential spaces. The project aims to replace temporary structures with high-rise apartments fitted with essential services. These include water, electricity, and organized waste systems. Officials argue that this shift will significantly improve living standards.

However, the reality on the ground is more complex. The affected zones are home to thousands who depend on the area for both shelter and livelihood. Small businesses, social ties, and daily survival are deeply rooted within these communities. For many, relocation is not just about moving houses but losing an entire way of life.

Authorities have assured residents that they will be given priority when the new housing units are allocated. Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has previously emphasized the long-term benefits of the project. Still, doubts remain, especially among those who fear being left out or unable to afford the new units.

As the countdown continues, tension is rising. Some residents are scrambling to find alternative accommodation, while others are holding onto hope for clearer communication from the government. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the transition will be smooth or marked by resistance and distress.
