70 Killed in Haiti’s Breadbasket as Gang Violence Turns Key Farming Region into Battleground

Haiti’s most fertile region is now a place of fear. The Artibonite, known as the country’s breadbasket, has been hit by a deadly wave of violence. At least 70 people are feared dead after a brutal gang attack near Petite-Rivière. Dozens more were injured. Thousands have fled their homes. The scale of the attack is far worse than early official reports suggested.

The assault began before dawn. Armed men stormed rural communities around Jean-Denis. They moved from house to house. Homes were burned. Residents ran for safety in the dark. By the time security forces arrived, much of the damage had already been done. Police said roads had been sabotaged. Deep holes slowed their response. Survivors were left with little protection.

Human rights group Défenseurs Plus gave a grim picture. It estimated at least 70 deaths and about 6,000 people displaced. The United Nations also raised concern. Its figures showed thousands had already fled even before the attack. A spokesperson said estimates of the dead range widely and called for a full probe. “The lack of a security response… demonstrates a complete abdication of responsibility by the authorities,” the rights group said.

The violence is linked to powerful gangs expanding beyond the capital, Port-au-Prince. The Gran Grif is believed to be behind the attack. In an audio message, a voice linked to leader Luckson Elan suggested it was retaliation against rivals. This signals a dangerous shift. Rural areas are no longer safe.

The Artibonite region has seen repeated attacks. In 2024, over 100 people were killed in a similar massacre nearby. Now, the cycle continues. Armed groups are growing stronger. State control is weakening.

For many Haitians, the crisis is no longer just political. It is about survival. Farms are abandoned. Food supply is under threat. Over 1.4 million people are displaced nationwide. Haiti’s breadbasket is slowly turning into a battlefield.
