“A Party That Ignores Its Youth Has No Future”: Oburu Defends Babu Owino, Calls for Change in ODM

Interim ODM leader Oburu Oginga has dismissed claims that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino paid supporters to chant his name during Raila Odinga’s funeral. Speaking to NTV on Sunday, November 3, Oburu said the allegations were politically motivated. He added they aimed to damage Babu’s reputation.

Oburu explained that emotions ran high at the funeral. Spontaneous chants, he said, were natural. “I was with him this morning, we were talking and I don’t see any reason why he should be isolated. If people are shouting his name, it’s because he is popular,” he said. He questioned the logic of the claims, noting that Babu has no voter base in Bondo. “Does it even make sense that he would hire people there?” he asked.

On claims that Babu disrespected the funeral, Oburu said any politician would risk backlash. He noted that the public often sympathizes with leaders who appear unfairly targeted. “People were emotional and as a leader, you must respect their feelings. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would try to disrespect the family,” he said.

Oburu also addressed concerns that Babu might be sidelined ahead of the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race. He assured that ODM does not pre-allocate tickets before elections. He promised a fair nomination process. “Babu has to feel comfortable in ODM and part of the family. If there’s competition, everyone will get a fair chance and the best candidate should win,” he said. He dismissed claims that Raila had endorsed Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja for a second term.

Turning to party leadership, Oburu emphasized youth participation. “Personally, I believe in the youth. They should take charge, and that’s why some call me a Gen Z or youth leader,” he said. He added that ODM already has young leaders who should be nurtured and supported.

Oburu concluded with a strong message on generational change: “A party that ignores its youth today has no future tomorrow.” His remarks come as ODM undergoes political shifts following Raila’s death. Young leaders like Babu Owino are pushing for greater influence. The party is working to balance experience with fresh leadership.

The statement reinforces ODM’s commitment to fairness, inclusion and empowering the next generation of leaders.
