A rare and explosive political-religious clash has erupted after Donald Trump launched a sharp verbal attack on Pope Leo XIV, questioning his leadership and accusing him of political bias.

Speaking after a flight from Florida, Trump said he was “not a fan of Pope Leo” and claimed the pontiff was “a very liberal person” who should “stop catering to the Radical Left.” He further added that the Pope was “doing a very good job,” but not in a positive sense, intensifying the tone of his criticism.
Trump linked his anger to the Pope’s recent remarks on global conflicts, particularly the US-Israel tensions involving Iran. He rejected the Pope’s suggestion that military escalation reflects a “delusion of omnipotence,” insisting instead that his own policies were justified by national security concerns. “We don’t like a pope who says it’s OK to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters.
The President went further online, posting a lengthy statement accusing the Pope of political interference. He wrote, “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela,” referencing past US actions in Latin America. He also suggested that Leo’s election was influenced by his nationality, saying he would not be Pope without US support.
Trump’s remarks quickly triggered backlash from religious leaders. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops responded with concern, saying it was “disheartened” by the tone of the comments and stressing that the Pope is not a political rival but a spiritual leader.
Pope Leo XIV has not directly responded, but he has recently called for peace, warning that “God does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.” His message has been widely interpreted as a rebuke to escalating global conflicts.
The unprecedented exchange has raised alarm across diplomatic and religious circles. Analysts say the clash highlights growing tensions between faith leadership and political power at a time of global instability.
