A fierce leadership feud has erupted at AFC Leopards, pitting current chairman Boniface Ambani against his predecessor, Dr. Dan Shikanda, in a heated dispute over alleged financial mismanagement and corruption. The fallout has spilled into the public arena, reviving long-standing concerns about governance at one of Kenya’s oldest and most popular football clubs.

Ambani, who took office in June, accused the former administration of leaving behind a trail of debt, unpaid bills and legal battles that nearly crippled the club. In a statement shared on social media, he alleged that the previous management “systematically drained the club,” citing misused gate collections, questionable sponsorship deals and frozen bank accounts that placed the team’s assets at risk of auction.
He further claimed that some officials collected ticket revenue through personal M-Pesa accounts and neglected the club’s women’s and junior teams. “We found a hollow shell of a club, drained by insiders,” Ambani said, adding that his administration had already begun clearing debts and restoring stability within months.
However, Shikanda hit back sharply on Friday, dismissing Ambani’s accusations as false and politically motivated. He demanded evidence to support the claims, insisting that every transaction during his leadership was properly documented and approved. “Facts over fiction,” he stated. “True leadership means solving problems, not crying about them online.”
Shikanda admitted the club faced legal cases but said most dated back years before his tenure, including disputes from as far back as 2013. He maintained that his team professionally resolved more than 15 court cases and conducted a transparent handover, complete with financial records and debt listings. He also questioned Ambani’s credibility, pointing out that Ambani’s brother served on the club’s technical bench during his term.
The public spat has alarmed supporters and analysts, who warn that the infighting could derail AFC Leopards’ recovery both financially and on the pitch. Many are now calling for an independent audit to establish the truth and restore trust.
For now, the once-united club remains divided, with both leaders insisting they are fighting to protect AFC Leopards’ proud legacy; even as fans plead for unity before the damage becomes permanent.
