Residents of Ongata Rongai were left on edge after two lionesses escaped from Nairobi National Park. The Kenya Wildlife Service confirmed the incident. It urged the public to stay calm but alert.

KWS said the animals were last seen near Sholinke Trading Centre. The area is about eight kilometres from the park boundary. It lies roughly nine kilometres from the centre of Ongata Rongai. The sighting caused concern because the area is busy and highly populated.
KWS quickly deployed rangers and veterinarians. Their task is to track the lionesses. They aim to capture them safely. The animals will be returned to the park. The agency said public safety remains the top priority. It also stressed that the lions must not be harmed.
Residents in affected areas were advised to take precautions. Parents were told to keep children indoors. People were urged to avoid the location. They were also asked to stay vigilant, especially in the early morning and evening.
“Two lionesses from Nairobi National Park have been sighted in the Sholinke Trading Area, about 8.3 kilometres from the park boundary,” KWS said. “Our teams are actively managing the situation.”
The incident adds to rising cases of wildlife straying into residential zones. Lions and hyenas have been spotted in parts of Rongai in recent months. Rapid urban growth near the park has increased human-wildlife encounters.
KWS has warned that animals may leave the park in search of food or territory. It has urged residents near wildlife areas to remain cautious. Authorities say updates will be shared once the lionesses are secured and returned to the park.
