Another Kenyan teenager has drawn national attention after starting a bold tree-hugging campaign in central Nairobi to raise money for his brother’s urgent medical care. Fourteen-year-old Stephen Gachanja began the challenge at Jeevanjee Gardens, vowing to hold onto a tree for 50 hours.

Stephen started the emotional protest on January 7. He said he would not eat or drink during the period. His goal is to raise funds to take his younger brother, George, to India for specialised treatment. George suffers from a serious ear condition that has troubled the family for years.
According to Stephen, his brother previously underwent surgery in India and recovered. However, the condition returned months ago, forcing the family to seek treatment again. He explained that the cost of travel, medical care and accommodation is high, placing heavy pressure on the family.
As news spread, crowds gathered at the park. Many Kenyans praised Stephen’s courage and love for his brother. Others questioned whether tree-hugging campaigns were becoming overused. The stunt follows similar actions by environmentalist Truphena Muthoni and Pastor James Irungu, who recently used the same method to raise awareness.
Stephen’s father, Mwalimu Gachanja, confirmed the medical condition. He said George suffers from a ruptured eardrum. When it bursts, pus leaks and causes pain, dizziness and health risks. He added that the condition can worsen if untreated.
Medical experts say a ruptured eardrum can result from infection or injury. While some cases heal naturally, others require surgery to avoid hearing loss or serious complications.
Despite mixed reactions online, Stephen insists his mission is not about attention or breaking records. He says he is driven by love and desperation to help his brother. The teenager hopes to raise at least KSh 3 million to cover the medical costs.
As the hours continue to pass, Stephen remains by the tree, hoping his sacrifice will inspire Kenyans to support his family and help save his brother’s life.
