Veteran trade union leader Francis Atwoli has been re-elected Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions for another five-year term, extending his long leadership of the workers’ umbrella body.
The election took place during a delegates’ meeting at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu. More than 250 representatives from 47 affiliated unions gathered to vote for the organisation’s top leadership positions.
Atwoli’s victory marks his sixth term as secretary general. The result also makes him the longest-serving leader in the history of the labour federation.
Speaking after the announcement, the outspoken union leader thanked delegates for the trust they had shown in him. He said the renewed mandate reflects the expectations of millions of Kenyan workers.
“This renewed mandate is not mine alone, it belongs to the millions of workers whose rights and welfare COTU (K) continues to defend and advance,” he said during his acceptance speech.
Atwoli has been leading the powerful workers’ union since 2001. Over the years, he has remained a prominent figure in labour issues and national debates on workers’ welfare.
The Central Organization of Trade Unions represents more than three million workers through its network of affiliated unions across different sectors. The organisation plays a key role in advocating for better pay, improved working conditions and stronger labour protections.
Beyond representing workers in negotiations with employers, the federation also advises government institutions on labour relations and employment policies.
Established in 1965, the union federation was formed to unite workers under one national labour movement and strengthen their bargaining power.
Atwoli’s re-election signals stability in the leadership of the labour body as it continues to push for workers’ rights amid changing economic conditions.
With another five-year term ahead, the veteran unionist is expected to remain a central voice in shaping labour policy and protecting the interests of Kenyan workers.
