Baby James Chooses Sonko Over Kisii Family in Emotional Standoff

A child’s voice has taken centre stage in a heated custody dispute. Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has stopped plans to return Baby James to his relatives in Kisii. The move follows rising pressure and claims of blackmail from members of the child’s extended family. But it is the boy’s own words that have shifted the narrative.

Sonko revealed that he had prepared to take the child back. He says the decision was made calmly and without force. However, the plan changed suddenly. “The child clearly and firmly refused. He chose to remain under my care,” Sonko said. The former governor insists he will respect the boy’s wishes. He also linked the moment to faith, saying the truth had prevailed. The case has since drawn public attention, with many debating child welfare versus family rights.

In a striking moment, Baby James spoke directly to his uncle. His message was clear and emotional. “Uncle Sam, leave dad alone. I am not coming back to Kisii… I love my daddy,” he said. He added that life in Nairobi felt better, mentioning toys and celebrations. The statement quickly spread online. It painted a picture of a child who feels safe and settled. It also intensified the dispute, placing the child at the heart of a public storm.

Sonko has strongly criticised what he calls misinformation. “I will not tolerate lies, propaganda, or misinformation,” he warned. He accused some individuals of using the situation for personal gain. At the same time, he promised to prioritise the child’s well-being. He said the boy will grow up in a stable environment with proper care and education. Still, he extended an olive branch. “Family members are welcome to visit,” he said, “and he is willing to facilitate their travel.”
