The death of Beatrice Elachi’s son, Elvis Murakana Namenya, has been a delicate and emotive one, and as condolences trickle in, a section of Kenyans are dragging the lawmaker for past comments in support of the government at the height of protests and police brutality.
On Tuesday evening the country learned of the passing of Beatrice Elachi’s son Elvis Murakana Nyamenya, who died from complications from a recent road accident. Tributes have already hit fever pitch, with commiserations coming in from the president, political parties, and elements from all political divides.
In mourning with Elachi, the president prayed for comfort for Elachi’s family after the loss of their son.
“May God grant Mheshimiwa Beatrice Elachi and the family strength to bear with the loss of their dear son, Elvis Murakana. Be comforted by the word of the Lord in Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Rest in peace, Elvis,” posted President Ruto on X.
Other leaders, including governors, colleagues in the National Assembly and the Senate have condoled with Beatrice as well.
At the same time though, a section of Kenyans have seized the moment to fault the M.P for her past remarks that could have been distasteful in nature, and also in support of brute activities by the government.
One of those remarks is one she made on the 13th of January earlier this year, in defense of President Ruto’s government. The statement reads as follows:
“If Kenya is bad, why not leave? What are you doing here at a bad place? Disappear. Let us respect the president.”
A section of Kenyans has been hot on Elachi’s heels for the statement, finding it distasteful in the spirit of patriotism. The lawmaker has also been targeted for supporting the government during last year’s protests when scores of young people were shot and killed.
The outpouring of emotions succeeds the anger harbored by Kenyans, especially those from the younger generation, whose irk from last year’s spate of brutality simmers fresh in their minds.
