Bees Disrupt Burial in Makueni, Over 10 Hospitalised in Sudden Attack

A burial ceremony in Kasemeini Village turned into chaos after a sudden swarm of bees attacked mourners. More than ten people were injured and rushed to hospital. The incident forced the funeral to pause. Families and guests scattered for safety.

The gathering was held in memory of a man who had recently passed away following a road accident involving a motorbike. The ceremony had begun peacefully. Relatives had gathered to pay their final respects. Speeches were underway when the bees descended unexpectedly. Panic spread quickly across the venue.

Witnesses described the scene as overwhelming. People ran in different directions. Some sought shelter inside nearby homes. Others covered their heads with clothing to avoid stings. The situation escalated within minutes. What began as a solemn farewell became an emergency response.

Local health officials confirmed that the injured victims were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Most of them were reported to have sustained multiple bee stings. Medical teams attended to the patients promptly. Authorities have not yet determined what triggered the swarm.

Community leaders have urged calm as investigations continue. Residents say such incidents are rare but can happen without warning, especially in rural areas with trees and open land. They have encouraged safety awareness during large gatherings. Organizers are also being advised to assess surroundings before hosting public events.

The burial was temporarily suspended to allow the area to be cleared. It later resumed after the bees dispersed. Family members expressed gratitude that no fatalities were reported from the attack.

The unusual incident has left the community shaken. It has also highlighted the need for better preparedness during outdoor ceremonies. Authorities are expected to review the matter and provide guidance to prevent similar disruptions in future gatherings.
