A birthday celebration at Chesumot Resort in Kapsaos Ward, Ainamoi Constituency, turned tragic on Monday when a middle-aged man drowned in the resort’s water pan. Friends said he had visited to celebrate his birthday, mingled with guests, took photos and later went for a boat ride.

Eyewitnesses reported that while trying to get onto the boat, the man slipped and fell into the water. Panic quickly spread as friends raised the alarm. Resort management immediately launched a rescue operation. Initial attempts were hampered by the depth of the water pan, forcing rescuers to suspend the search overnight.
On Tuesday, January 13, expert divers were brought in. They conducted a thorough search and retrieved the man’s body. Brooke Police Station was notified, and officers transported the body to Kericho County Referral Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
The resort management expressed shock over the incident, calling it an unforeseen tragedy during what was meant to be a joyful celebration. They announced the campsite would remain closed indefinitely for a comprehensive risk assessment.
“Please note the Chesumot Campsite will be closed to day visitors until further notice. We need to reassess safety measures to ensure absolute safety for our guests. We will reopen after the reassessment,” the resort stated.
Chesumot Resort also stressed that safety gear is always provided for water activities. Life vests are available, and guests are encouraged to use them. The management quietly acknowledged the unfortunate incident, while reaffirming their commitment to visitor safety.
The tragedy highlights the importance of water safety in recreational facilities. Authorities and resort operators are expected to review protocols to prevent similar accidents. Guests and operators alike are urged to strictly follow safety instructions to avoid future tragedies.
