The resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba has added fresh tension to African football at a critical moment. The outgoing secretary general of Confederation of African Football announced he was stepping aside, describing it as a personal decision. Yet his exit comes as the organisation faces growing criticism over leadership and controversial rulings that have shaken trust across the continent.

Mosengo-Omba insisted he leaves with a “clear conscience.” In his statement, he said, “I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint.” He defended his tenure, claiming he strengthened CAF and helped drive progress. Still, pressure had been building. Critics questioned why he remained in office beyond the official retirement age. Others accused him of fostering a difficult working environment, claims later dismissed after an internal probe.
The timing of his departure is significant. CAF is under intense scrutiny following its decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title. The ruling came after a chaotic final against Morocco. Senegal players had briefly walked off the pitch in protest during stoppage time. Despite returning to win the match, CAF later awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory after an appeal.
That decision has sparked outrage among fans and officials. It has also triggered an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Many now question CAF’s consistency and fairness in handling major competitions. The controversy has overshadowed the tournament and damaged the image of African football.
Mosengo-Omba, a former FIFA official, had close ties within global football leadership. He also served under CAF president Patrice Motsepe. While he thanked colleagues and leadership, his exit leaves a leadership gap. CAF confirmed that competitions director Samson Adamu will step in on an interim basis.
As CAF awaits a final ruling on the AFCON dispute, the organisation faces a defining period. Restoring credibility may prove harder than managing the game itself.
