Cameroon is facing new questions after opposition leader Anicet Ekane died in detention on Monday. His party confirmed his death in Yaounde. Ekane was arrested on October 24 in Douala. He had been detained just before the presidential results were released. The results gave President Paul Biya another term at 92. His death has raised anger, concern, and strong reactions across the country.

Ekane’s party says his health declined soon after he was moved to the State Defence Secretariat, known as the SED. They say they asked officials to transfer him to a better-equipped hospital. They say their requests went unanswered. His supporters even called for an emergency medical evacuation on Sunday.
\It never happened. Ekane had been arrested for supporting Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who declared himself the winner before official results. His party called the arrests unfair and meant to intimidate citizens.
Analysts say the SED has long controlled high-profile political detainees. They say conditions there are harsh. They say many detainees lack proper care. The defence ministry denies negligence. It says Ekane received proper treatment.
It says an investigation is underway. Public reaction has been strong. Many Cameroonians are demanding answers. Many want accountability for his death.
Ekane was born in Douala in 1951. He joined the UPC in 1973. He later founded the Manidem party in 1995. He was arrested before in 1990 with the Yondo Black group. He ran for president in 2004 and 2011. His death has shaken the political scene. It has renewed debate on rights, detention, and leadership in Cameroon.
