CCTV footage from Eagol petrol station in Karai, Naivasha, has revealed the fatal moments leading to the death of former MP Cyrus Jirongo. His Mercedes Benz entered the station, bypassed the fuel pumps, and exited directly into oncoming traffic. Seconds later, a speeding Climax Coaches bus collided with his car. The bus dragged the vehicle about 25 metres as smoke rose from the wreckage. Jirongo died instantly.

The cameras captured the incident clearly. At 2:18:43 p.m., Jirongo’s car entered from the Nairobi direction. He passed the pumps without stopping and turned to exit toward the Nairobi lane. The Climax bus approached at high speed. By 2:19:25 p.m., the bus hit the Mercedes. The car spun violently and came to rest 25 metres from the collision point. Smoke poured from the vehicle. The bus stopped 50 metres away. Passengers watched in shock.
First responders rushed to the scene. Peter Kamau, a motorcycle mechanic, was among the first to arrive. He said the doors were jammed and they had to break in with an axe. “He was alone and slumped over the steering wheel,” Kamau said. Inside, responders found a half-finished bottle of alcohol and a packet of cigarettes. Bus passengers lingered for about ten minutes before transferring to another vehicle to continue their journey.
Traffic police arrived later. They cordoned off the area, collected evidence, and towed both vehicles. No formal inventory of the car’s contents was taken. Authorities said that is the responsibility of first responders. Operations at Climax Coaches’ yard in Elementaita continued as normal. Buses refueled while passengers resumed their journeys.
The CCTV footage highlights the dangers on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. Karai remains a high-risk area. The crash underscores the need for careful driving and stricter road safety measures.
