Njoro Girls Senior School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely after the death of 18-year-old Form Four student Brenda Akinyi. Her family has accused the school of negligence. The incident sparked anger among parents and residents.

Tension escalated on Monday as demonstrations erupted outside the school. Residents and parents demanded answers over the circumstances surrounding Brenda’s death. Police moved in to disperse the crowds, leading to a brief standoff as protests intensified.
Brenda died at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school. Her family claims she did not receive timely medical attention. They also said they were not informed quickly about her condition. Relatives noted they live just a short distance from the school and could have intervened earlier if notified.
Her brother, Allan Otieno, said Brenda had been unwell for several days. He alleged she was only given painkillers while at school. He questioned why the family was not contacted sooner. Their mother, Millicent Anyango, expressed deep grief and frustration. She blamed the delayed response for her daughter’s death. She said she only realized the severity of Brenda’s illness when it was too late.
Some parents who joined the protests claimed this was not an isolated case. They alleged other students had died under similar circumstances in recent years. They are calling for an independent investigation into the school’s handling of student health emergencies.
However, the Nakuru County Director of Education dismissed claims of negligence. He said preliminary records show Brenda had a history of illness. Education officials added that due process will be followed to establish the facts surrounding her death.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death. Investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, the school remains closed as officials assess the situation. They are working to ensure the safety and wellbeing of other students.
The incident has raised nationwide concern about student health management in schools. It also highlights the importance of timely communication between schools and families during emergencies.
