Charles Osore, 52, is set to receive government compensation after killing a python that attacked and killed his dog. The incident happened in Luoka village, Madungu sub-location, Ugunja Sub-county. It gained national attention after being aired by Citizen TV. The case has raised concerns over rising human–wildlife conflicts in the area.

A team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), led by Grace Kariuki, Senior Warden for Kisumu and Siaya Counties, visited Osore’s home. They came to assess the situation and start the compensation process. Kariuki praised Osore for cooperating despite losing his pet. She stressed that the government will handle the matter. Residents were urged to report wildlife incidents promptly.
KWS officials also promised to hold awareness sessions in the area. These sessions will teach residents how to safely deal with wildlife, including snakes and monkeys. The initiative aims to reduce conflicts and promote wildlife conservation. Residents will learn the proper steps to take when animals threaten their property or safety.
Osore’s actions shocked many. After killing the python, he took both the snake and his dog’s carcasses to the local police station. His protest was meant to draw attention to human–wildlife conflicts. Speaking during the KWS visit, Osore thanked the government for responding. He urged officials to act quickly and efficiently in future incidents.
Local residents, led by Alfred Onyango, also expressed gratitude. They said the KWS visit helped them learn about wildlife management. They now understand the right channels for reporting conflicts and how to handle encounters safely.
The incident shows that clashes between humans and wildlife are increasing in rural Kenya. Authorities say timely reporting and community awareness are essential. KWS hopes these efforts will protect both people and animals.
Osore’s case highlights the need for vigilance, quick government response, and public education. The compensation process is ongoing and is expected to give relief to his family.
