China Moves to Scrap Hidden Car Door Handles in Major Push to Boost Vehicle Safety on All New Vehicles

China is preparing to transform car design and safety after announcing plans to phase out hidden door handles, a feature popularized by electric vehicles and luxury models. From next year, all new cars sold in the country must feature visible and mechanical door releases, signaling a major shift away from sleek, flush designs that have become common on modern vehicles.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed the new regulations on Monday. They will take effect on January 1, 2027. Under the rules, all car doors, except tailgates, must have exterior mechanical handles. Interior door handles must also include a mechanical release and be clearly visible, marked with permanent graphics for easy identification.

While the law applies from 2027, already-approved car models will have a two-year grace period to meet the new standards. Manufacturers will need to redesign doors to comply with the safety requirements during this period.

The decision follows rising concerns about the safety of flush and electronic handles. These handles, designed to sit flat against the car body, improve aerodynamics and create a futuristic look. However, they can fail in accidents. When power is lost or the car structure is damaged, doors may not open, leaving passengers trapped.

Public concern intensified after a high-profile crash in October in Chengdu. Rescuers struggled to open the doors of a burning Xiaomi electric car, and the driver, reportedly under the influence, died at the scene. The incident fueled debate over whether style has been prioritized over safety in modern EVs.

Chinese authorities say the new rules will enhance automotive safety and ensure that both drivers and rescue teams can open doors quickly in emergencies. The regulations also reflect China’s influence on the global EV industry. As the world’s largest electric vehicle market, Chinese brands sell millions of cars domestically and abroad. Last year, BYD overtook Tesla as the top EV seller globally.

Since Tesla introduced flush handles with the Model S in 2012, many automakers have adopted the style. Now, China is signaling a shift in priorities: sleek designs must not compromise safety. The new regulations are expected to shape the next generation of EVs and passenger cars, ensuring protection for drivers and passengers alike.
