Ministry of Health workers had a hard time yesterday in Rongo, Migori County after church members belonging to the Haleluya church, refused their children to get the measles/rubella vaccine. A section of students from Opapo Primary School missed out on the exercise as a result. Their church leader stated that their children are prayed for, and those prayers are enough to guard their children.
It is common during such exercises for some church members, because of their faith, to stop their children from getting immunized. The Ministry has expressed their concern over the poor sensitization they experienced in such areas.
“I am between a rock and hard place because this is a government exercise and this is a public school. But these pupils are under my care and I am aware that there church does not allow them get injection,” said their headteacher Dickson Osore.
The Ministry of Health has been conducting vaccines all over the country. Today is the last day of the vaccination exercise. Red Cross has played a big part in this exercise by sending text messages to people all over the country, encouraging all children to get vaccinated at the nearest health center.
