CNN Reports Alleges Mass Killings in Tanzania; Government Yet to Respond

The Tanzanian government faces scrutiny after a CNN investigation by Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo. The report claims deadly police crackdowns during the recent general elections. It alleges hundreds of protesters were killed. Authorities reportedly buried the bodies in mass graves to hide the brutality.

Larry Madowo sent detailed questions to the Suluhu-led government before publishing. At the time the report went live early Friday, November 21, officials had not responded. The government later said it was reviewing the findings. They promised to issue a statement after completing the assessment.

CNN’s investigation used multiple sources. The network interviewed over 100 people, including eyewitnesses and medical staff. It analyzed satellite images and video footage. Doctors told CNN that during the week-long protests, morgues received at least four trips of bodies daily. Medics were reportedly told not to treat the injured. “All of them, including those injured, were taken to morgues to die there,” one doctor said.

CNN verified videos showing morgues filled with bodies. Tanzanian authorities had dismissed these clips as fake or doctored. The network confirmed the footage’s authenticity, revealing dozens of deceased individuals in state facilities.

The report has drawn global attention. Human rights groups and analysts argue the findings indicate serious violations. Social media users quickly shared the report, sparking debate on the scale of the alleged atrocities.

While the government reviews the report, journalists and activists continue examining evidence. The investigation underscores the role of independent media in exposing human rights abuses. CNN’s work highlights the dangers faced by protesters.

The Tanzanian government has promised a statement. The world is watching closely for clarity. Officials face mounting pressure to respond to allegations of mass killings and rights violations.
