A cross-border investigation is underway after a deadly wildlife poisoning near Amboseli National Park. At least six lions and 34 vultures have died. The animals are believed to have fed on a cow carcass laced with poison in Kitenden, along the Kenya–Tanzania border. Conservationists describe it as one of the worst poisoning cases in the Amboseli ecosystem.

Wildlife officials from Kenya and Tanzania have launched joint investigations. Reports show two Tanzanian suspects are under close watch. In response, Kitenden Conservancy and Orgulului/Olalarashi Group Ranch have banned livestock grazing by herders from Kitenden village in Tanzania. The restriction will stay until the suspects are arrested and legal processes are complete.
Daniel ole Leturesh, chairman of Orgulului/Olalarashi Group Ranch, said the ban ensures cooperation with investigators. “No livestock from Kitenden village will enter the conservancy until the culprits are handed over. Accountability must come first for harmony to prevail,” he said.
The move has support from leaders on both sides of the border. Loomoni Olesiate Mole, Olmolo Ward councillor in Tanzania’s Longido District, said the restriction prevents conflict and protects wildlife. Tanzanian authorities also promised firm action. John Magembe, Chief Officer for Wildlife Management at Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, said the perpetrators will face justice.
Kitenden Conservancy chairman Sayialel Ole Noombaek said grazing will not resume until suspects are in court. “Wildlife protection is non-negotiable,” he said.
Conservationists warn that the loss of 34 vultures is alarming. The birds are among the most endangered in the region. They play a key role in controlling disease and maintaining ecological balance. Poisoning threatens the health of the entire Amboseli ecosystem.
The incident is a major test of cross-border cooperation. Experts say failing to act quickly could reverse decades of conservation gains. Swift action is needed to protect Amboseli’s wildlife.
