DCI Arrests Woman Over Stupefying Theft Spree in Nairobi

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have apprehended Jane Wangare Ndungu, linking her to a brazen criminal network that targets unsuspecting people in Nairobi’s nightlife. The syndicate reportedly uses a stupefying substance known locally as “mchele” to incapacitate victims before robbing their homes.

The investigation began after a man reported that he had been socializing at a local bar when a woman approached him and hugged him following a pool game. Shortly afterward, he felt dizzy and left the venue with her. Upon waking at home, he discovered that his laptops, a Samsung S22 phone, KSh168,000 in cash, and jewellery worth KSh50,000 were missing.

Using forensic evidence and intelligence leads, detectives tracked the suspect to Havilla Apartments in the Kihunguro area of Ruiru. “A search of the premises uncovered numerous items, including 40 mobile phones, 14 laptops, and an iPad with keyboard, some of which were confirmed to belong to the complainant,” police said.

Authorities say preliminary inquiries indicate Ndungu is part of a broader syndicate operating across Nairobi, often targeting people in bars and social venues. Victims are reportedly drugged with “mchele,” leaving them vulnerable while their homes are raided.

Ndungu remains in custody at Embakasi Police Station as detectives work to identify and arrest other members of the network. Officials have warned the public to remain cautious when socializing and report any suspicious encounters.

The case highlights the growing sophistication of Nairobi’s organized crime and the increasing use of psychoactive substances to commit theft. Police have assured residents that efforts to dismantle the syndicate and recover stolen property are ongoing. “We are determined to ensure that such criminal networks are neutralized and the public feels safe again,” a senior officer said.
