Former US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions worldwide. He approved an operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Some countries now under Trump’s warnings are set to compete in the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Trump personally oversaw airstrikes on Venezuela. American troops then captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from the presidential palace in Caracas. The US accuses Maduro of serious crimes, including narco-terrorism. On Monday, Maduro pleaded not guilty before US District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein. Trump promised Maduro would face the full force of American law.
Hours after the operation, Trump issued strong warnings. He singled out Mexico, Colombia, Greenland, Iran and Cuba. On Air Force One, Trump called Colombia “very sick” and accused its leaders of fueling the US drug trade. He added, “It sounds good to me. You know why? Because they kill a lot of people.”
Trump also criticized Mexico for not doing enough to stop drugs. He warned Iran over violence against protesters demanding Ayatollah Khamenei’s removal. On Truth Social, Trump said the US is “locked and loaded” to protect demonstrators.
The 2026 World Cup will allow teams from these nations into the US. Questions remain about fan and family travel. Executive orders will fast-track visas for players. Ticket holders will get expedited processing. Still, Trump’s threats raise security concerns. The situation shows how geopolitics could affect sports on a global stage.
