Driver Charged After Crash That Injured Anthony Joshua and Killed Two Close Friends in Nigeria

Nigerian police have charged a driver after a deadly road crash that injured boxing star Anthony Joshua and killed two of his close friends. The case has drawn wide attention at home and abroad.

Police said Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State on Friday. The crash happened on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Kayode faces four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving. The court adjourned the case to January 20. He was granted bail of five million naira but remains in custody until he meets the conditions.

Investigators say early findings point to speeding. They also say the driver tried an illegal overtaking move. The vehicle then hit a stationary truck, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Joshua, 36, was travelling in a Lexus SUV when the crash happened on Monday. He suffered minor injuries. Doctors treated him and later discharged him in stable condition. His promoter, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed he is recovering well.

Two of Joshua’s friends and team members died in the crash. They were named as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their deaths have shocked the boxing world and Joshua’s fans.

President Bola Tinubu sent condolences to the families of the victims. He also wished Joshua a quick recovery. Many public figures and fans shared messages of support online.

Joshua was born in Britain to Nigerian parents. He had recently returned to the spotlight after a major win. Just days before the crash, he knocked out American influencer Jake Paul in Miami.

Despite the tragedy, Joshua is expected to continue his career. Plans are still in place for a possible fight later this year. A long-awaited bout against fellow Briton Tyson Fury remains on the table.

The case will return to court later this month. Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
