Rescue teams in Elgeyo Marakwet recovered four more bodies on Monday, raising the death toll from the recent landslides to 30. Authorities confirmed the victims; one male and three females were found in Chesongoch, Marakwet East Constituency, during ongoing operations. The disaster, triggered by heavy rains on Friday, October 31, has left over 20 people missing.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen urged residents in the Kerio Valley to heed early warnings and relocate to safer areas. “Move to higher ground and avoid unnecessary risks,” he said. So far, 19 survivors have been rescued, while several others are receiving treatment at Chesongoch Mission Hospital.
Blocked roads and floods are slowing rescue operations. The government has deployed helicopters to assist with evacuations and deliver medical aid. Multi-agency teams from the National Government Administration Officers, Kenya Red Cross and National Police Service are coordinating relief efforts. They are searching for trapped individuals and distributing essential supplies.
Heavy rains are also affecting other regions. Floods and landslides have caused deaths and destroyed property in Kisumu West, Central and East, Tana River County including Dhuhush, Lebille, Bultobanta and Bangale – Garissa County, Laikipia, and parts of Mombasa such as Mburukenge and Kaa Chonjo. The Ministry of Interior warned that rainfall will persist, increasing the risk of floods and landslides, especially in hilly and riverine areas.
Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and act promptly. “Our priority is saving lives and protecting communities,” Murkomen added. Communities are encouraged to follow warnings and relocate when necessary. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to provide medical care and distribute relief materials.
The rescue mission remains ongoing. Authorities hope to save more survivors while monitoring affected regions closely. Citizens are advised to prioritize safety as heavy rains and dangerous conditions persist across the country.
