End of an Era: Safari Rally Goes Private as William Ruto Pulls Government Funding

President William Ruto has announced a major policy shift that will change the future of the World Rally Championship Safari Rally. This year’s event marks the final time the Kenyan government will finance the globally recognised competition.

Speaking at Hell’s Gate National Park, Ruto said the private sector will take over all aspects of the rally beginning next year. This includes funding, management and promotion.

“From next year, this event will be fully funded by the private sector,” he said.

The President expressed confidence in corporate players who have already shown strong support. He commended Kenya Commercial Bank, Safaricom, Kenya Airways and SportPesa for backing the rally.

He noted that shifting the financial burden away from the government will allow more investment in grassroots sports and infrastructure. The move is expected to strengthen talent development in schools and communities across the country.

On the competition side, the 2026 rally delivered high-octane action. Takamoto Katsuta and co-driver Aaron Johnston of Toyota Gazoo Racing emerged winners. Adrien Fourmaux and Alexandre Coria finished second, while Sami Pajari and Marko Salminen came third.

Tourism stakeholders also recorded significant gains. According to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, hotels in Nakuru County and surrounding areas reached full occupancy during the event. Visitors from across the East African region turned up in large numbers.

Ruto emphasised the broader economic benefits of hosting international events. He said they support businesses, create jobs and boost foreign exchange earnings. “Our country remains a welcoming destination for the world,” he said.

He also assured motorists that traffic congestion between Nairobi and Nakuru will soon ease. The dualling of the Rironi–Mau Summit road is expected to be completed by next year.

The shift to private funding marks a new chapter for the Safari Rally and Kenya’s sports landscape.
