Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Fırat has died at the age of 56 after reportedly suffering a heart attack. His death has brought sadness across the football community, especially among Kenyan fans who remember him for guiding the national team through a difficult era.

Fırat was serving as head coach of Lebanese club Nejmeh SC before his sudden death. Reports from the club indicate that he collapsed at an airport in Istanbul shortly after arriving from Beirut. The unexpected incident shocked many people who had worked with him in recent months.
Messages of condolence quickly spread online. Players, supporters and football leaders from different countries shared memories of the coach and the impact he had during his career.
In Kenya, Fırat is mostly associated with his time managing Harambee Stars from 2021 to 2024. He accepted the role when the national team was facing serious challenges following Kenya’s suspension from international competitions by FIFA.
Because of that suspension, the team had very few official matches to play. This forced the coach to organise friendly matches and brief training camps so that players could stay active and continue working together as a team.
The situation made his job unusually difficult. Without regular competitive fixtures, building a strong and consistent squad became a major challenge.
Fırat often spoke publicly about the problems affecting football in Kenya. He frequently highlighted the shortage of stadiums approved for international games and the disruptions caused by long-running administrative disagreements.
These challenges meant the national team sometimes had to play matches outside the country instead of hosting them at home. For players, this meant frequent travel and less support from local fans.
Even after leaving the national team role, Fırat maintained links with Kenyan players. Some footballers who had played under him at Harambee Stars later worked with him again at club level.
Opinions about his time with the national team were divided among supporters. While some questioned the results, others recognised the difficult circumstances he faced.
His passing now marks the end of a chapter connected to one of the most complicated periods in the history of Harambee Stars.
