EPRA Cracks Down on Adulterated Fuel, Closes and Fines Several Petrol Stations

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has revealed several petrol stations selling adulterated fuel and petroleum meant for export. Between January and March 2026, the regulator conducted 2,713 tests across 758 sites. While most stations passed, a small number were found breaking the law.

EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo said, “From the tests, 753 (99.34%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from five (0.66%) sites turned out to be non-compliant.” Some of the offending stations were fined and allowed to reopen after upgrading their products, while others remain closed with fuel impounded and court cases pending.

For example, Asis Energy in Kapkayo and Green Wells Energies in Kisumu resumed operations after paying KSh 101,638 and KSh 435,100 in penalties, respectively. Meanwhile, stations in Wajir, Kwale, and Nyandarua counties remain shut for selling fuel not fit for local consumption.

EPRA said it continues to monitor fuel quality under Section 92 of the Petroleum Act 2019. The agency urges the public to report any suspicious activity through its hotline (0709 366 000), SMS (40850), or USSD (*363#). A complete list of non-compliant sites is available on EPRA’s website.

The crackdown comes as fuel prices rise due to international conflicts affecting crude oil. The Central Bank of Kenya noted a surge in global oil costs, which has translated into higher pump prices locally.

EPRA’s enforcement drive aims to protect motorists, ensure fair competition, and prevent products meant for export from entering the local market. Authorities say buying fuel from verified stations is crucial to avoid safety risks and damage to vehicles.

This initiative shows the government’s determination to uphold fuel quality standards, holding defaulters accountable while encouraging public participation in reporting violations.
