The European Union, together with the UK, Canada and other partners, has warned Tanzania. They demand the government uphold human rights. Citizens must access information and express themselves freely. The call comes after the October 29 General Election. Violence erupted, many were injured and lives were lost.

The joint statement, released on December 5, 2025, follows earlier warnings from the EU High Representative and foreign ministers of Canada, Norway and the UK. These statements highlighted the unrest and its tragic effects. The EU called the violence unacceptable. Authorities must act immediately to protect citizens and enforce the law.
Reports from national and international organizations show extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and arbitrary arrests. Bodies of victims were hidden. The EU and partners urge the release of political detainees. Families must receive the bodies. Detainees must get legal and medical support. These actions will restore public trust and accountability.
The partners also want Tanzania to implement AU and SADC observer recommendations. Election gaps and irregularities must be addressed. Investigations into violence should be independent, transparent, and inclusive. Civil society, religious groups and political actors must participate.
The statement stresses that Tanzania must respect rights and deliver justice. Transparency and accountability are essential. Acting now can rebuild confidence and improve Tanzania’s global reputation.
