Facebook has officially overtaken TikTok to become Kenya’s most popular social media platform in 2025, marking a significant shift in the country’s digital landscape. The comeback is largely driven by the platform’s renewed focus on short-form video content like Reels and highly personalized recommendation feeds that keep users scrolling longer.

Recent data from Cloudflare’s internet traffic rankings places Facebook ahead of TikTok, which had previously dominated Kenya’s social media space. The findings show that Kenyan users are increasingly drawn to Facebook’s video-centric updates and engaging discovery features; a move that mirrors global trends in online content consumption.

Facebook’s latest success is not accidental. By adopting a model similar to TikTok’s “For You” feed, the platform now delivers a continuous stream of short, vertical videos tailored to individual interests. This change has sharply increased user activity and screen time, pulling back audiences who had drifted to newer social apps.

While TikTok continues to thrive, especially among younger audiences, its once unchallenged reign appears to be fading as Facebook reasserts its dominance. The report notes that Meta’s family of platforms; Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp now occupy leading positions in Kenya’s digital rankings, surpassing traditional entertainment sites like YouTube.

The surge in Reels use has transformed how Kenyans interact with social media. Many users now prefer fast, visually engaging clips over lengthy posts or traditional news feeds. This shift aligns with a broader global trend as platforms compete for fleeting user attention through short, dynamic video formats.

Experts say Facebook’s rise highlights Kenya’s changing digital habits, where personalization, entertainment and quick engagement drive the online experience. For content creators and businesses, the platform’s regrowth presents new opportunities to reach audiences through relatable, concise and visually rich storytelling.

As 2025 unfolds, Kenya’s social media scene seems to have some full circle;  with Facebook once again at the center of digital life, reinvented, refreshed and firmly tuned to the tastes of a new generation.
