Residents along the shores of Lake Victoria in Mbita are in disbelief after fishermen retrieved live bombs from the water in two separate incidents. What started as a normal fishing routine quickly turned into a security scare that has left the community uneasy.

The first discovery took place on March 1, 2026, at Litare Beach. Fishermen cast their nets expecting a large catch. Instead, they pulled out a sealed container filled with explosive devices and ammunition. Realising the danger, they left the item at the shoreline and informed local authorities.
Police officers arrived at the scene and secured the area. The explosives were carefully collected and moved to a safe location. Officials described the devices as extremely dangerous and urged anyone who encounters similar objects to avoid touching them and report immediately.
Just a day later, another group fishing at Koguna Beach made a similar find. This time, they recovered 14 additional bombs from the lake. The repeated discovery brought the total to 20 within two days, heightening concern among residents and security agencies.
Authorities confirmed that the items include propellant-type explosives and bullets. The recovered materials have been taken to the sub-county police headquarters for temporary storage. Specialists from the Bomb Disposal Unit will later handle their destruction in a controlled environment.
Fishermen say the incidents are troubling because they depend on the lake for their livelihood. Some recall earlier discoveries in previous years, which adds to their anxiety. They worry about the risk of accidental explosions while working.
Security officials have begun reviewing the situation and encouraging public vigilance. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the explosives ended up in the lake. Meanwhile, patrols and awareness efforts are expected to continue to ensure the safety of fishing communities.
