Kenya’s fastest man, sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala, has opened up about why he would have raced American streamer IShowSpeed only for KSh 6.4 million. The announcement captured fans’ attention as Speed toured Kenya on January 11 and 12, sparking excitement over a potential showdown between the sprint champion and the viral internet star.

Omanyala explained that as a professional athlete, he cannot risk injury or pause his career for a casual exhibition. “I am not an influencer; I do this for money. Companies pay me because of running, so an exhibition run has to cover my time and risk,” he said. He stressed that every race carries inherent danger, making compensation essential before he could consider competing.
The sprinter emphasized that any race must be proper and competitive. He suggested a full 100-meter or longer sprint in a stadium with fans, rather than a short or informal run. “If we are racing, it has to be serious. No jokes. It has to be proper,” Omanyala said. He declined 50-60 meter sprints or street races, highlighting that professional standards guide all his competitions.
Omanyala’s fee sparked debate on social media. Some praised him for valuing his career and time, while others criticized the price, noting that Speed had previously met other celebrities without paying them. Regardless, Omanyala defended his position, stressing the difference between professional athletics and influencer entertainment.
Although the race never happened, Speed had already left for Ethiopia. Omanyala remains hopeful. He also expressed interest in showing the streamer around Nairobi and introducing him to Kenyan cuisine if the race fails to occur. Fans continue to imagine the showdown, leaving the door open for a potential future event.
Omanyala’s explanation highlights the balance athletes maintain between professionalism and fan engagement, ensuring competitive encounters are taken seriously while still thrilling the public.
