Final Moments of Raila Odinga: PA Recalls Heartwarming Last Gesture at Capital Hill Office

The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga left an unforgettable mark on those around him, even in his final days. Jack Odhiambo, Raila’s former personal assistant, has revealed the poignant last moments he shared with the veteran leader at his Capital Hill office before traveling to India for treatment.

Raila had traveled to India after a blood clot in his head required specialised care, following conflicting medical opinions in Kenya and Dubai. His brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, explained that Nairobi doctors initially treated him with strong steroids, which kept him away from public engagements. President William Ruto later arranged a private jet to fly Raila to Mumbai. Though the surgery cleared the clot, he sadly passed away a week later while recuperating in Kerala.

Odhiambo recounted a heartwarming moment from Raila’s final days in the office. “That week Baba left, while he was leaving, I was carrying his briefcase. When we got to the lift, he (touching his pocket) asked if I had the key. Then he tells me to stop at the lift, opens the briefcase and gave me KSh 100,000. He removed KSh 100,000 from the briefcase and told me to give each and every person who was there.

And he told me in Luo. He took the money and spat on it like blessing it. That was his last time in his office. At the lift, the guy was still holding the lift open. And Mzee never came back,” he said.

The gesture, small but meaningful, reflected Raila’s generosity and care for his staff. Even facing serious health challenges, he ensured that those around him felt valued. For many who worked closely with him, this moment stands as a testament to his character. Raila Odinga’s legacy is remembered not only for his political leadership but also for the kindness he extended to those by his side.
