Former Presidential Candidate Abduba Dida Serving 7 Year Sentence in USA Prison

Mohamed Abduba Dida, a former Kenyan presidential candidate known for his outspoken views and unconventional political style, is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in the United States.

Dida, who ran for the presidency in 2013 and 2017, was convicted in 2022 on charges of stalking and intimidation in McLean County, Illinois, and is currently incarcerated at Big Muddy Correctional Center, Illinois.

Dida’s legal troubles began when he was accused of stalking an unidentified individual and transmitting threats. He was convicted on two counts: receiving a two-year sentence for stalking and threats, and an additional five years for aggravated stalking and violating a restraining order. The case has shocked many of his supporters in Kenya, where Dida was once a vocal critic of the government and a prominent figure on social media.

The former teacher and politician had largely disappeared from the public eye before news of his legal issues surfaced, leaving many Kenyans surprised by his sudden fall from grace. Dida’s imprisonment marks a dramatic turn for a man who once aspired to lead Kenya, now serving time far from his home country.

“Plaintiff claims that now at Big Muddy he has been approved as a volunteer imam, but he has only been allowed one Friday prayer.

“He has otherwise been denied prayers before and after sunrise and sunset, and he has been denied three additional prayers,” reads a legal complaint filed in the US District Court, Southern District of Illinois.
