“Freedom at Home Isn’t Guaranteed Abroad”; Mudavadi Cautions Kenyans Against Crossing Borders

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has warned Kenyans to be careful when traveling abroad. He said freedoms enjoyed at home, especially freedom of expression are not guaranteed in other countries. He spoke at the opening of the three-day Kenya Software AI Summit 2025 at Moi University School of Law in Eldoret.

Mudavadi noted a rising trend of Kenyans crossing borders without understanding local laws. “Many leave the country without appreciating the legal terrain of the places they are going to,” he said. “Many end up on the wrong side of the law. Freedom here is not the same as elsewhere.”

He specifically cautioned young people about their online activity. Social media is increasingly checked by foreign governments. “There is now a tendency for social media checks before a visa is issued,” he said. “Those with negative content on their handles might lose opportunities abroad.”

Mudavadi encouraged the youth to use digital platforms responsibly. A positive online presence can boost career growth, open doors and create new opportunities. He urged citizens to think before posting and to engage online constructively.

His remarks follow incidents involving Kenyans facing trouble abroad. Last week, Bob Njagi and Nick Oyoo were reportedly detained in Uganda after joining presidential aspirant Bobi Wine’s campaign. Similarly, several Kenyans were held in Tanzanian cells during recent elections. They later described their detention as harsh and “horrific.”

“These cases show the need to understand regional laws and act responsibly abroad,” Mudavadi said. He advised against political involvement or activism in other countries without full knowledge of the rules.

He reminded Kenyans that liberties at home do not automatically transfer across borders. Responsible travel, lawful conduct and careful online engagement are key. By acting wisely, citizens can protect themselves and their opportunities abroad.
