From Glory to Controversy: Senegal Lose AFCON Crown as Morocco Declared Winners

What began as a historic triumph for Senegal has now turned into one of the most controversial moments in African football. The Confederation of African Football has officially overturned the AFCON final result, handing the title to Morocco after ruling that Senegal forfeited the match.

The final itself had been tense and dramatic. With the score still level late in the game, a penalty awarded to Morocco sparked chaos. Senegal’s players protested the decision and briefly left the pitch, bringing the match to a halt. Although they later returned and went on to win in extra time, CAF has now determined that the temporary walk-off violated competition rules. According to the ruling, “the Senegal national team is declared to have forfeited the match,” with the result recorded as a 3-0 win for Morocco.

Morocco’s football authorities maintained that their appeal was about fairness and not the performance on the pitch. In a statement, they said their move was “solely to request the application of the competition regulations,” stressing the importance of respecting established rules. On the other side, Senegal’s football body has strongly rejected the outcome, calling it “unjust, unprecedented and unacceptable,” and confirming plans to challenge the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The decision has sparked widespread debate across the continent. Fans, players, and analysts remain divided over whether rules should outweigh what happened on the pitch. What is clear, however, is that the 2026 AFCON final will be remembered not for the football played, but for the controversy that followed long after the final whistle.
