From Tree Hug to Desert Lessons: Truphena Muthoni Takes Kenya’s Green Mission to Dubai

Days after making headlines for her 72-hour tree-hugging challenge, Truphena Muthoni has taken her environmental mission abroad. The 22-year-old has travelled to Dubai on a fully sponsored trip. The journey blends holiday travel with environmental learning. It also marks a new step in her conservation work.

This is not a typical festive getaway. Instead, the trip is driven by purpose. Before departure, Muthoni said she wants to learn how a desert city protects indigenous trees. Dubai faces extreme heat. Rainfall is low. The soil is sandy. Yet trees continue to survive. Her trip, sponsored by a local tours and travel company, focuses on both leisure and education.

Dubai is famous for its skyline and luxury lifestyle. However, the city also tells a strong environmental story. Despite harsh natural conditions, green spaces exist across the emirate. This success comes from clear policy, innovation and public involvement. Indigenous trees, especially the Ghaf tree, continue to thrive. The Ghaf is the national tree of the United Arab Emirates.

For Muthoni, the contrast with Kenya stands out. At home, forests face pressure from deforestation and climate change. Population growth adds to the challenge. As a result, she wants to understand how conservation laws are enforced. She is also curious about public participation. During her stay, she plans to look beyond tourist landmarks. She will explore desert landscapes and conservation projects.

In recent years, the UAE has invested heavily in sustainability. Water-efficient irrigation supports green spaces. Treated wastewater is reused. Tree-planting programmes focus on native species. Urban planning also integrates vegetation into roads, parks and homes. The Ghaf tree is protected by law. Anyone who damages it faces heavy penalties.

This trip comes at an important moment. Muthoni recently adopted a forest in Kenya. The knowledge she gains will support her work back home. As she begins her journey, excitement meets responsibility. Her goal is clear. She hopes to prove that even deserts can go green with vision, discipline and respect for nature.
