Fuel Tanker Explodes After Collision on Nairobi’s Southern Bypass, Leaving One Dead and Causing Massive Fire

A lorry and a fuel tanker collided on Nairobi’s Southern Bypass near Ram Residency on Saturday morning, January 24. The impact triggered a massive fire. Witnesses reported thick smoke and high flames at the scene. One driver was confirmed dead, while nearby vehicles suffered damage.

According to eyewitnesses, the tanker was heading to Kikuyu. It lost control after hitting a pavement. The lorry then crashed into it, causing an explosion. Flames spread quickly, engulfing three cars parked at a nearby car wash. Emergency crews arrived immediately to control the fire.

Police from Lang’ata sealed off the affected stretch. Vehicles from Mombasa Road heading toward Kikuyu were allowed to pass slowly. Traffic congestion built up quickly. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area. Alternative routes were recommended until the fire was contained.

Officials warned the public not to approach the scene. Toxic fumes and risk of further explosions made the area dangerous. Nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and follow instructions. Firefighters focused on preventing the fire from spreading to other vehicles and properties.

The tanker driver died at the scene. The condition of the lorry driver is yet to be confirmed. Emergency teams worked to extinguish the fire. They also managed traffic to ensure safety. Police said the blaze required a major response because of the fuel involved.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Speed, road conditions, and mechanical failure are being considered. The crash highlights the risks of transporting fuel through busy urban roads. Traffic delays persisted along the Southern Bypass, affecting commuters and freight operations.

Police and emergency crews urged drivers to be cautious. They also warned residents to avoid the area. Authorities stressed that safety must come first in accidents involving hazardous cargo. The fire is now under control, but the area remains cordoned off.
