Gachagua Opens DCP Doors to ODM Rebels as Rift Widens, Warns Ruto’s Influence Will Cripple Party

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has signaled a major political shift, announcing that his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) is ready to welcome ODM leaders likely to be sidelined or pushed out. Speaking at the party headquarters in Nairobi while receiving newly elected leaders from recent by-elections, Gachagua emphasized that DCP is open to like-minded politicians seeking a new political home. “Our doors are open to anyone being mistreated or silenced,” he said, noting that tensions within ODM are forcing leaders to reconsider their allegiances.

He accused President William Ruto of trying to seize control of ODM following the death of its founder, Raila Odinga, claiming such a move would weaken the party nationally. “If ODM surrenders to Ruto’s agenda, it will lose its influence overnight,” Gachagua warned.

He highlighted divisions among ODM members, pointing out that Junet Mohamed and Gladys Wanga now back the government, while Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino oppose the shift. Gachagua urged both men to consider DCP if they face expulsion. “Sifuna is a solid leader. We will support him if he wants to run for Nairobi Senator,” he said, adding that Owino could find a political home in DCP or Wiper.

He stressed that Nairobi still rejects Ruto’s influence and predicted heavy losses for the ruling side in the 2027 elections. He reaffirmed that DCP promotes unity and welcomes leaders from all regions who share its ideology.

“We aim to sweep every elective seat in Nairobi,” he said confidently, citing the party’s recent success in the November 27 by-elections where it won three MCA seats: Kariobangi North, Narok Town and Kisa East. “These victories,” Gachagua added, “demonstrate DCP’s growing momentum and the appeal of a united opposition.”
