The government has assured Kakamega residents that the recent Ksh.683 billion gold discovery in Isulu–Bushiangala will bring direct benefits. Officials stressed that the project is meant to drive economic growth, create jobs and improve living standards while avoiding conflict.

During the Western Region Media Projects Tour, Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura outlined plans to ensure the discovery benefits communities. He highlighted that Kenya’s mining law provides a clear revenue-sharing framework. Seventy percent of proceeds will go to the national government, 20 percent to Kakamega County and 10 percent directly to the local population.
To further involve residents, the mining company is required to contribute 1 percent of its annual gross sales to community development. These funds will be overseen by a 14-member committee tasked with prioritizing key investments. Roads, schools, health centers, water systems and environmental protection initiatives will take precedence.
Dr. Mwaura assured residents that no one will be displaced without proper compensation. Government teams are already on site to supervise a fair and transparent process. “These measures will boost the economy, enhance local development, and allow mining operations to proceed smoothly,” he said.
He added that the Kenya Kwanza Administration is committed to inclusive growth. The government continues to implement programs in agriculture, education, trade, infrastructure, and markets to ensure no region is left behind.
The Western region, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia, has already seen significant investment. Over 77 projects are underway, including gold processing plants, industrial parks, roads, bridges, airstrips, affordable housing, modern markets, water supply expansions, and energy initiatives.
Dr. Mwaura explained that the media tour provides residents with a firsthand view of government projects. It also encourages them to take ownership and hold decision-makers accountable.
With transparency and participation at the forefront, the administration hopes the Kakamega gold discovery will act as a catalyst for economic transformation. Residents are expected to benefit directly, gaining jobs, improved services and opportunities for sustainable local development.
