Government Clarifies: Two People Suspected Trapped in South C Nairobi Building Collapse as Rescue Operations Intensify

The government has confirmed that two individuals, not four, are suspected to be trapped in the building that collapsed in South C, Nairobi. Authorities believe the victims may still be alive, driving intensive rescue efforts.

Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the collapse happened at around 4:05 a.m. on January 2, 2026, in the South C Shopping Centre area. He expressed concern and solidarity with the affected families.

Immediately after receiving reports, a multi-agency emergency response led by the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) was activated. CS Ruku said the NDMU Director, Dr. Duncan Ochieng, is serving as the Incident Commander. A fully operational Incident Command System has been deployed at the scene.

“The incident management team is working day and night,” CS Ruku said. “They are using specialised equipment and proven urban search and rescue techniques while acting within the golden rescue window for building collapses.”

He assured the public that the government is sparing no effort, resources, or expertise. The response focuses on four key objectives: safeguarding first responders and the public, rescuing suspected victims, reopening roads and clearing debris once rescue priorities allow.

CS Ruku warned against spreading speculative information. He confirmed the collapsed structure is a 14-storey building with basement parking that suffered a complete pancake-type collapse. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation by a multi-sectoral team, including the National Police Service, National Construction Authority, National Building Inspectorate, Engineers Board of Kenya, BORAQS, NEMA and Nairobi City County.

He promised accountability, saying, “Any person or group found culpable will be held fully accountable under Kenyan law.” He confirmed that two people are suspected trapped and may still be alive, motivating the ongoing rescue efforts.

CS Ruku also cautioned that the structural integrity of nearby buildings has not been verified. The public should avoid the area until official updates are issued. He commended emergency responders from the police, Kenya Defence Forces, National Youth Service, Kenya Red Cross, St John Ambulance and other agencies working under hazardous conditions.
