Government Reshapes Nairobi with Three New Administrative Sub-Regions to Boost Service Delivery

The government has created three new administrative sub-regions in Nairobi. The move aims to improve efficiency and bring services closer to residents. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the changes on Thursday.

The new units are Nairobi North, Nairobi East and Nairobi West. Murkomen said the city’s growing population of over five million people made the restructuring necessary. He added that the plan follows feedback from the Jukwaa La Usalama forums held earlier this year.

“We promised to reform the National Administration to serve Kenyans better,” said Murkomen. “This change will make services more accessible and responsive to wananchi.”

Each sub-region will be led by a County Commissioner. They will report to the Regional Commissioner for Nairobi. Simon Odhiambo Osumba will head Nairobi North, Patrick Simiyu Werre takes charge of Nairobi East, and Rose Wanjiru Chege will lead Nairobi West.

According to a gazette notice, Nairobi North will include Roysambu, Ruaraka, Kasarani, Kamukunji and Mathare. Nairobi West will cover Lang’ata, Kibra, Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South and Westlands. Nairobi East will consist of Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Embakasi North, Embakasi South, Embakasi Central, Njiru, and Makadara.

Murkomen said the restructuring is part of a wider plan to decentralize operations and make government offices more effective. He noted that local administrators will now have more authority to act on public concerns quickly.

At the same time, the CS announced a reshuffle among County Commissioners across Kenya. Joseph Mwangi Wamuti moves to Tana River, Linda Adhiambo Okola to Taita Taveta, and David Ntawuasa Saruni to West Pokot. Others include Michael K. Yator (Kajiado), Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru (Kericho), and Peter Mwangi Maina (Vihiga).

Murkomen said the appointments take effect immediately. He explained that the deployments were based on the officers’ performance and feedback from the Jukwaa La Usalama meetings. The CS said the new structure will make the government more efficient and closer to the people.
