Government Responds After Cheaper Passport Options Removed from eCitizen, Leaving Only the Most Expensive Option

The government has responded after cheaper passport options disappeared from the eCitizen platform. Kenyans applying for new passports now see only the most expensive booklet.

A review of the platform shows that the 50-page passport, previously priced at KSh9,500, is no longer available. New applications and standard renewals now default to the 66-page passport at KSh12,500. This means applicants must pay the highest fee.

Earlier, in July 2025, the 34-page passport, the cheapest option at KSh7,500, was withdrawn. Before these changes, citizens had three options: 34 pages at KSh7,500, 50 pages at KSh9,500, and 66 pages at KSh12,500. The removal of lower-cost options sparked public concern.

On Friday evening, the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services issued a statement responding to these concerns. Officials acknowledged public worries over the missing A and B Series passport booklets on eCitizen.

The department said measures are in place to ensure applications continue without disruptions. Officials stressed that passport processing is ongoing and there is no interruption in service. They also confirmed that efforts are underway to restore all passport series on the platform.

Travel agents and applicants said the removal of cheaper options caused frustration. Students, first-time applicants, and low-income earners were most affected. The government reassured citizens that the restrictions are temporary.

Officials added that the changes are part of system upgrades and broader reforms to improve service delivery. They encouraged Kenyans to monitor the eCitizen portal for updates on availability.

For now, applicants must use the 66-page passport booklet. The department said cheaper options will eventually return. Once restored, all Kenyans will have access to more affordable passports.

The government emphasized its commitment to facilitating travel and ensuring passport services are efficient. Citizens are advised to continue applying online while the platform is updated.
