Residents across Kenya are bracing for increased rainfall starting Thursday, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department. The agency warned that light showers early in the week will intensify, bringing afternoon and night thunderstorms to several regions.

The rains are expected to affect the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South-eastern Lowlands, and coastal areas. Key counties include Nairobi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Meru, Nakuru, Kisumu, Machakos, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale. The Meteorological Department said, “The rain intensity in these areas will increase from Thursday.”
Highlands East counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Embu should prepare for morning showers in some areas, with afternoon and night rainfall spreading across more locations. Similarly, the Highlands West, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Bomet, and Kericho, will see light rain early in the week giving way to heavier downpours later.
The Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley are forecast to follow a similar pattern, with bright spells gradually turning into showers. Coastal counties, including Lamu and the Tana Delta, are also expected to experience increasing rainfall from Thursday.
The Meteorological Department cautioned that some areas could experience sporadic heavy rainfall, raising the risk of localized flooding. Residents are urged to adopt safety measures and remain vigilant. “The public should keep up with daily forecasts, especially in flood-prone areas,” the agency advised.
While most of the country will experience rainfall, North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya are expected to remain mostly sunny and dry throughout the week. Travelers and local communities are advised to prepare for possible disruptions, including waterlogged roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The forecast highlights the need for local authorities to ensure drainage systems are clear and emergency services are ready. With rains expected to cover large parts of the country, preparedness will be key to minimizing damage and keeping communities safe.
Kenya’s seasonal rains, though vital for agriculture, can also bring challenges for urban and rural areas alike. Awareness and caution are essential as residents respond to the approaching wet weather.
This week’s rainfall could impact transport, farming, and daily life, making it critical for Kenyans to follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and plan accordingly.
