“I Will Take You to Canaan, Through Singapore, As Raila Wanted”: Oburu Oginga Steps Into ODM Leadership, Vows Party Strength

Dr. Oburu Oginga has officially assumed leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the death of his brother, Raila Odinga. Speaking during the Lake Region Community Dialogue in Kisumu on Saturday, January 24, he acknowledged the weight of the responsibility. “I will take you to Canaan, through Singapore, as Raila wanted,” he told party supporters, referencing both a biblical analogy and President William Ruto’s vision for Kenya.

Oburu said he cannot replace Raila. He said he can only carry forward his brother’s vision with the support of ODM’s grassroots. He compared the transition to Joshua taking over from Moses, emphasizing continuity. “Raila had already said he might not reach the destination with us, and unfortunately, that came to pass,” he added.

He explained that he never sought the position of party leader. “I never imagined that Raila Odinga would die before me. After his death, I found myself becoming party leader. I can never be Raila Odinga. I cannot copy or replace him; he left very big shoes that no one can fit, including myself,” Oburu said. Despite this, he expressed confidence that he could guide ODM with party support. “With your support as Onagi, I believe I can lead ODM successfully. I am asking for your full support,” he added.

Oburu reminded members of the party’s role in the broad-based government. He highlighted the ten-point agenda, focusing on education and healthcare. He urged ODM to make a clear decision on its political direction. “Some people still want ODM to remain in opposition. Now that I am party leader, we must decide clearly where we are headed,” he said.

He stressed that ODM remains active and influential. “Let it be clear that ODM is not asleep or silent. We must negotiate from a position of strength. We must vote with strength and with numbers,” Oburu said. He concluded by calling for unity within the party as it navigates coalition talks with the ruling party. He said ODM must define its role ahead of the 2027 elections.
