Ida Odinga Reveals Family’s Shock Over Raila’s 72-Hour Burial Wish and Shares Personal Memories

Ida Odinga, widow of the late political icon Raila Odinga, has opened up about her husband’s passing and the family’s surprise over his burial instructions. Many assumed the family would know about Raila’s wish to be buried within 72 hours, but Ida says this was not the case. She also shared touching memories of their life together and expressed gratitude for the support they have received from Kenyans.

Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India. He was accompanied by his bodyguard Maurice Ogeta, his sister Ruth, and daughter Winnie Odinga. Winnie revealed that her father died while exercising in the morning. Soon after, news emerged of Raila’s wish to be buried within three days. The short timeframe left many, including his own family, shocked and scrambling to make arrangements.

At a memorabilia event honoring Raila, Ida reflected on their 52 years of marriage. “Being Raila’s wife was the greatest joy of my life,” she said. “We shared good times and bad. He was a devoted husband and father, always close to the family, and a great head of the household. Now that he is gone, all we can do is carry his legacy and try to live according to the dreams he had for the family.”

Ida thanked Kenyans for their condolences. “Thousands, maybe millions, sent messages of sympathy,” she said. “Some came personally. Our ambassadors abroad opened embassies so people could condole with us. I am truly grateful.”

She admitted that the family was caught off guard by Raila’s burial request. “We did not expect him to die at this time,” she said. “Another surprise was his wish to be buried within 72 hours. I don’t know when or where he wrote this will. Seventy-two hours is very short, especially considering how Kenyan funerals usually unfold.”

Despite the shock, Ida emphasized the importance of honoring her husband’s wishes. She also reminded Kenyans that his legacy, dedication to family, and vision for the country will continue to inspire generations.
