Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has ruled out the possibility of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino taking over the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He said the party’s internal systems make such a move almost impossible. However, he admitted that Babu remains a strong force in Nairobi politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, January 21, Junet, who is also ODM’s Director of Elections, dismissed Babu’s push for the top seat through the National Delegates Convention (NDC). He said that although the NDC is the party’s highest decision-making organ, it does not guarantee victory. He explained that real power in ODM comes from party structures, networks, and internal alliances.
According to Junet, Babu has continued to call for the NDC in the hope of becoming party leader. However, Junet argued that the current political reality does not favour him. He said Babu lacks the support needed within the party. He also insisted that ambition alone cannot override established systems. In his view, Babu’s chances of winning the ODM leadership remain very low.
However, Junet struck a more positive tone when discussing Babu’s future in Nairobi. He admitted that the MP has strong grassroots support in the capital. He said Babu stands a real chance of challenging Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027. He added that Babu’s popularity, youth appeal, and visibility make him a serious contender for the governor’s seat.
At the same time, Junet defended the quick installation of Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as ODM party leader following the death of Raila Odinga. He said the move aimed to protect the party from instability. He compared ODM to a small government. He said it cannot operate without leadership. He warned that a vacuum would invite chaos and internal fights.
Meanwhile, Junet dismissed claims that ODM could be absorbed by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He said such ideas are unrealistic. He argued that Kenya’s politics now favours coalitions, not mergers. He cited the Jubilee Party. He said swallowing smaller parties in the past weakened it.
Finally, Junet rejected claims that Babu has become the new political kingpin of Luo Nyanza. He said leadership in the region remains collective. He insisted it cannot be claimed by one individual.
