“Justice Returns to Kikuyu!”: Residents Celebrate Reopening of Law Courts After Fire

Residents of Kikuyu constituency cheered on Monday as Kikuyu Law Courts officially reopened. The courts had been destroyed during the GenZ protests in June 2025. For four months, residents struggled to access justice.

Court Administrator Duke Mainye promised that services would resume fully. He assured residents that sureties, including title deeds and logbooks, would be returned. “There are burnt title deeds, and some of these cases are being handled by management. We are exploring ways to fast-track them. Continuing with criminal cases has been a major challenge,” he said.

MCA Kamau Boro praised the reconstruction efforts. He said the new blocks were built by the Kikuyu business community in collaboration with local religious groups. During the courts’ closure, residents had to travel to Limuru Law Courts, delaying urgent criminal cases. “Criminal cases were taking too long. Urgent matters were shifted to Limuru Courts, and now justice will be delivered on time,” Boro said.

The courts were set ablaze during national anti-government protests. In Kikuyu town, protestors clashed with police and set tyres on fire along the roads. The demonstrations were part of nationwide protests remembering victims of the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.

The reopening brings relief to the community. Leaders said the restored courts will reduce delays in pending cases. Residents will also reclaim lost documents more efficiently. Mainye emphasized that the judiciary is committed to reinstating all services in the precincts.

Residents thanked the business community and local groups for their support in rebuilding. The reopening is seen as a symbol of resilience. It reflects the community’s determination to ensure that justice is timely and accessible for all.
