Retired Kakamega Diocese Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti has died. He was 88. He passed away at Nairobi Hospital on Sunday night. The news was confirmed by Bishop Joseph Obanyi.

“This morning, it is with sadness that I share the passing of our beloved Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti at Nairobi Hospital last night at 11 pm,” Bishop Obanyi said. He sent condolences to Sulumeti’s family, friends, and the Kakamega Diocese community.
“Keep him in your prayers and remember him in the masses. Burial arrangements will be shared soon. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.
Philip Sulumeti was born on August 15, 1937, in Kotur village, Teso South, Busia County. He was ordained a priest in Kisumu on January 6, 1966. He was known for his devotion to pastoral work and community service.
He rose quickly in church leadership. In 1972, he became Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu. At 35, he was named Titular Bishop of Urci. He was consecrated bishop on August 20, 1972. On December 9, 1976, he became Bishop of Kisumu.
On February 28, 1978, he became Bishop of Kakamega. He led the diocese for more than 30 years. Under his guidance, membership and infrastructure grew. Outreach programs expanded. He retired on December 5, 2014, leaving a lasting legacy.
Bishop Obanyi asked the faithful to honor Sulumeti’s life with prayers. Funeral plans will be announced soon.
Bishop Philip Sulumeti is remembered as a devoted servant of God. He was a mentor to clergy and a pillar of faith in western Kenya. His death ends an era for Kakamega Diocese.
