KBC Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Mayienga FM Head Festus Amimo, Pledges Job for His Son

The media industry is mourning the death of Festus Amimo, the head of Mayienga FM. He died on Sunday, December 7, after collapsing in the early hours. Amimo was a respected broadcaster, mentor and chair of the Luo Journalists’ Association. He was admired for his dedication to journalism and his efforts to promote community voices.

On Tuesday, December 16, colleagues at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) held a candle-lighting ceremony to honor his life. The event at the KBC headquarters in Nairobi was filled with emotion. Journalists shared stories about Amimo’s kindness, leadership and devotion to his work. Many described him as a teacher who shaped the careers of many young presenters.

During a requiem mass, KBC Managing Director Agnes Kalekye Nguna announced that KBC will employ Amimo’s son, Kennedy Ibrahims. She said this move honors Amimo’s long service and lasting contribution. “Festus was not just a colleague, he was family,” she said. “His legacy will continue through his son.”

Amimo will be laid to rest on Friday, December 19, at his rural home in Awasi, Kisumu County. Family, friends and journalists from across Kenya are expected to attend.

Amimo’s colleagues remember him as calm, humble and passionate about community radio. His death is a deep loss to the journalism world. Though his voice has fallen silent, his influence will continue to guide and inspire future generations of broadcasters.
